What you actually need to know about personalised bumper phone cases
The straight version: TPU vs hard plastic, how we keep the profile slim without losing protection, what kinds of drops bumper cases actually survive, and which photos print sharpest on the back panel.
What a personalised bumper phone case is
A bumper case is a hybrid. The edges and corners of the phone are wrapped in flexible TPU (the soft rubbery plastic that absorbs impact), and the back panel is rigid plastic, printed with whatever design you upload. The two materials work together: the TPU edge does the protection where most drops actually break phones (the corners), and the rigid back panel takes the print.
Bumper cases are the slimmest format that still gives you meaningful drop protection. About 3-4mm of total thickness, 20-25g of weight, almost no different from holding the phone naked but with proper edge protection.
What we make them from
Two materials, snapped together. The bumper is moulded TPU, colour-stable so it won't yellow with sun exposure the way cheap silicone cases do. The back panel is rigid polycarbonate or acrylic, hard enough to take detailed print without flexing.
The print sits on the polycarbonate back panel, laid down with UV-cured inks rated for 12+ months of full sun before any visible fade. In real-world use (most phones don't sit face-down in direct sun for hours a day) the print outlasts the phone.
TPU edges instead of hard plastic, and why
The most common way phones break is edge-on impact. The phone falls and lands on a corner; the corner concentrates all the kinetic energy of the fall into a tiny contact area; the shock transfers straight through to the screen and the internals.
A rigid plastic edge does nothing to absorb this; the shock passes through unchanged. A TPU edge flexes inward on impact, spreading the load over a bigger area and a longer time, which dramatically reduces the peak force the phone actually sees. Same idea as a car crumple zone.
For the everyday drops most phones actually experience (phone slipping off a coffee table, sliding off a car seat, dropping out of a back pocket) a TPU-bumpered case absorbs the impact and your phone walks away unharmed. Where bumpers stop working is severe drops onto concrete from chest height; for those, you need a full tough case.
How we keep them slim without losing protection
Cheap bumper cases hit 6-7mm of total thickness because the manufacturer just bolted a thick TPU surround onto a thick back panel. Ours are 3-4mm. Two reasons.
First, the TPU formulation. We use a denser TPU that absorbs more energy per millimetre than the cheap stuff. So the bumper can be thinner and still do the same protective work.
Second, the back panel. We make it just thick enough to take print without flexing, no thicker. Some manufacturers use over-engineered back panels because they're cheaper to mould in bulk; we tune ours specifically for print quality and slim profile.
The result feels close to a naked phone in the hand. You can still feel the volume buttons properly, plug cables in cleanly, slide it into trouser pockets without the snag. Most of what you give up with a thick case stays with you on a slim bumper.
Bumper vs the other three case types
- Wallet case: Folio cover, card slots, full screen protection. No edge impact absorption. Choose wallet if you'd happily ditch a separate wallet and don't mind the bulk.
- Snap case: All-rigid polycarbonate, slightly slimmer than a bumper, no flexible edge for impact absorption. Choose snap if you want maximum print impact and don't drop your phone.
- Tough case: Six-sided protection, raised screen lip, port covers. Survives 2m drops onto concrete. Bulky. Choose tough when survival matters more than slim.
- Bumper case: Slim, light, with proper corner protection where it counts. The right pick when you want everyday drop protection without going to a tough case, and a personalised print that isn't hidden behind bulk.
What makes a good photo to print on one
- 1500 by 1500 pixels minimum. The back panel is flat (no wrap to worry about) so resolution requirements are simpler than for a snap case.
- Bright contrasty images print best. The flat back panel gives no surface distortion, so colours show exactly as designed. Saturated, vibrant images pop more here than they do on a wrapped snap case.
- Mind the TPU edge. The bumper covers the outer 4-5mm of the back panel from the inside; anything in those edges of your image will be hidden when the case is assembled. The designer shows you the safe area.
- Light backgrounds make the print pop. The TPU bumper is usually black or clear; light print backgrounds create visual contrast with the bumper edge. Very dark print backgrounds blend into the bumper and lose impact.
Keeping it nice for years
- Damp microfibre cloth for cleaning. Alcohol-based cleaners can dull the TPU bumper's matte finish over months.
- Pop the back panel off occasionally. Lint accumulates between the back panel and the phone over months. Pop the case apart every couple of months, wipe both surfaces, snap back together.
- The TPU loosens slightly with age. After 18-24 months the bumper edge stretches a fraction; installation and removal get easier. Doesn't affect protection.
Good gift use cases
Holiday photos print vividly on the flat back panel. Beach scenes, mountain backgrounds, city skylines, anything wide and bright.
Pet portraits are reliably popular. The flat panel handles a high-contrast headshot beautifully, and pet owners use these every day for years.
Baby photos for new parents work well on slim cases specifically; the photo sits cleanly on the back without competing with the phone for attention.
Custom artwork from illustrators and graphic designers translates particularly well. The flat panel is closer to a print-on-paper surface than the curved snap-case back.
